According to Patheos.com, “A 21-year-old Christian was arrested in Fort Smith, Arkansas after he was caught destroying three statues in a Buddhist temple.”

He stated that he was commanded by scripture to destroy the statue, which he referred to as a “false idol.” He repeatedly claimed he was following the “Ten Commandments” and did what God told him to do through scripture. The man, Shawn Michael Israel, had a Bible and a hammer with him when he was arrested.

He further stated that he had tried to destroy the statue the previous day, but the tool he was using broke as he demolished the statue’s head. He returned on Sunday to smash the body of the statue with the hammer.

According to ABC News Australia, “An investigation by Background Briefing has uncovered dramatic scenes in the Kimberley region, where Aboriginal followers of a Tongan-born preacher have set fire to artifacts considered sacred by many local elders, and dismantled and burned a spiritual law ground.”

Patheos.com writes, “According to the report, the vandalism of sacred objects is being conducted by the followers of Pastor Ana Makahununiu, a young Pentecostal preacher who claims that ‘traditional Aboriginal culture is a type of devil worship.’”

ABC News Australia goes on to say:

A year after Ms Makahununiu arrived, her followers built a bonfire to destroy ‘satanic’ objects they thought were cursing their community, and filmed the process…

A grainy video of the bonfire shows people cheering as objects are thrown into the flames and black smoke billows into the air.

“For many years we have been deceived by Satan and his demonic beings,” an unidentified man narrates as the fire burns.

“Now we throw away all the things that have been keeping us in bondage and slavery.”

Inside the Swaminarayan Temple on Bardstown Road in Louisville, there are still shards of shattered glass, bold, black spray-paint and a stunning scene of sacrilege for Hindu worshipers like Raj Patel.

“Regardless of what religion you are, this should not happen,” Patel said. “It’s just a sign of disrespect to anyone. I moved here from New Jersey, and one of the first things that was a requirement for me was to make sure that there was a Swaminarayan temple — or a Hindu temple — for me to be able to go to, to basically worship in peace.”

This is unconscionable, yet is the typical result of the type of religious exclusionism which is the very foundation of the Abrahamic religions, especially Christianity and Islam.
